Biography

After graduating from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with a Bachelor in Classical Piano Performance, Heather became best known for her work as one quarter of internationally renowned independent rock band, The Jezabels. The band has sold over 300,000 records worldwide, won an ARIA award and the Australian Music Prize. Shannon has spent most the past decade writing and recording award winning albums and performing in venues such as the Sydney Opera House, The O2 Arena (London), Webster Hall (New York) and at festivals such as Glastonbury (UK) and Lollapalooza (USA) and Pukkelpop (BE).

As a composer, Heather has received commissions from the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and The Metropolitan Orchestra. In 2021 she released a solo piano album titled Midnight Sun which was described by Guardian Australia as a “collision of perfection and punk” and was written whilst on an artist residency in the Wesfjords of Iceland. Other composition work includes co-writing soundtracks for three independent Australian Films ‘Book Week’ (2018), ‘Broke’ (2016) and Sharko (2024).

Heather has worked as a session musician with internationally renowned musicians including Peter Garrett, Laura Jean, Sarah Blasko and Tony Hadley. After recording Garrett's 2nd solo album 'The True North' Heather toured extensively with Peter Garrett and The Alter Ego’s throughout 2024-2025.

Heather’s composition practice attempts to reconcile the differing classical and contemporary musical worlds she operates in. She has recently finished a master's in composition research at the Sydney Conservatorium on the topic of the Australian Gothic, which explores the cultural ghosts of classical music traditions through uncanny musical forms and the Australian landscape. This area has spurned a new body of work which includes Strange Roses for Orchestra and Synthesiser, performed by Heather and The Metropolitan Orchestra in 2023 at Marrickville Town Hall

Midnight Sun

"Midnight Sun is a jagged, aching and transportive album of solo piano compositions that begun during a 2017 ArtIceland residency in the town of Ísafjörður. It’s an album of contrasts and contradictions: peacefulness punctuated by dissonance, swinging between “resolution and uncertainty”.
